Caddo Parish schools has announced its "Students of the Year," which recognizes students who have demonstrated excellent academic achievement, leadership ability, and citizenship.

The District Students of the Year winners are:  Ceara Johnson (South Highlands Elementary Magnet), Safa Michigan (Caddo Middle Magnet), and Madeline Wagnon (Captain Shreve High School).  They will represent Caddo at the Regional Competition in Bossier City, Louisiana, on March 5.

Madeline Wagnon, a senior at Captain Shreve High School in the gifted and talented programs, is a multi-faceted young woman who divides her time between academics, leadership, service and the arts. While maintaining a 4.0, she currently serves as President for Z-Club and FCA, Youth and Government Vice President, Senior Class Treasurer, Student Council Executive Board, Mu Alpha Theta Treasurer, National Honor Society, and Varsity Cheer.   Madeline has represented Caddo Parish as a Girls State Delegate, a member of the Louisiana Legislative Advisory Council Group, a Youth and Government Delegate, and a State, Regional and National Student Council Convention Delegate.  She has also served as a HOBY Ambassador and was selected as a Louisiana HOBY World Congress Delegate.  With a heart for service, she is a Co-Founder for the ongoing  “Studying to Achieve Results” Honor Roll Program at The Providence House, a member of the Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission Youth  Council,  and serves with her youth choir and percussion ensemble at her church.  Madeline has performed in numerous theatrical productions in our community as a senior company member with the Academy of Children’s Theatre.  She will be pursuing a degree in Speech and Communication Disorders where she can continue to encourage others.

Safa Michigan, an 8th grader at Caddo Middle Magnet (CMM), is the 2013 Caddo Parish Middle School Student of the Year. She is the daughter of Sunny Hussain and Saimah Talukder. Safa knows the importance of balancing academics with extra curricular activities as she has maintained a 4.0 for all three years of her middle school education. Safa plays the piano and tennis when she is not promoting the various campaigns for her non-profit organization, Made in America, Inc.  Her organization promotes social awareness and education, which was recently recognized by Governor Bobby Jindal and Representative John Fleming. Safa also loves to write and recently published her first book, History Matters for Children. At school, she is a Gateway student who is actively involved in numerous clubs including National Junior Honor Society, Mathcounts, Elegant Leaders in Today’s Educational Society (ELITES) and Peer Advocates. Safa’s passion for competitive academic activities includes winning 1st place in the CMM Spelling Bee, state finalist in the Prudential Spirit of Community for volunteer service, 1st place in CMM Science and Social Studies Fairs, 1st in Seedlings and 2nd place in CMM Geography Bee. She will be attending the Congressional National Youth Leaders State Conference in Birmingham, AL. in February. Later this year she will be teaching a leadership and education curriculum at the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club. Her favorite classes are history, math, and English, and she has chosen to attend Caddo Magnet High School next year.

Ceara Johnson, a 5th grade student at South Highlands Elementary Magnet, has been named the 2013 Caddo Parish Elementary Student of the Year for Caddo Parish.  Ceara is the daughter of proud parents, Kevin and Roishene Johnson.  She is a straight-A student and enjoys math, science, and robotics.  She will be representing South Highlands next month at the Louisiana Region 1 Science and Engineering Fair.  Ceara is a published writer, and her writings were recently featured by the Duke University Talent Identification Program where she was named a Star Student.  She is also a vibrant dancer of the River Cities Dance Foundation and has performed in several dance competitions and theatrical productions.  Ceara is an active member of the South Highlands choir and her church choir where she plays acoustic guitar.  Ceara is well known for her ability to take initiative, to help others, and for her loyal friendship.  She plans to attend Caddo Middle Magnet in the fall.
