Caddo Parish Magnet High School announces that Henry Lin and Joan Liu placed 1st and 2nd, respectively, in the 2013 Louisiana Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS), and they will be attending the 2013 National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium in Dayton, OH May 3-7, 2013. Both Lin and Liu are seniors at Caddo Magnet.

Liu is a participant in the Science and Medicine Academic Research Training Program sponsored by the Biomedical Research Foundation of Northwest Louisiana and LSU Health Sciences Center
in Shreveport. She works under the mentorship of Dr. Yunfeng Zhao of the LSUHSC-S Department of Pharmacology, Toxicology & Neuroscience. Liu’s study involves investigating the effects of combining a chemotherapy drug with a natural compound in treating human breast cancer cells. Her work has potential to reduce the harsh side effects of the chemotherapeutic medication, Taxol.

As a participant in Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s 2012 Research Science Institute, Lin worked under the tutelage of Dr. Michael McDonald and Dr. Eric Miller, both of the MIT Kavli
Institute. Lin simulated clusters of galaxies to test for bias in a new type of observational survey that looks for imprints of the clusters in relic light from the big bang. His work may shed light on the mysterious heating and cooling processes present in clusters of galaxies.

The Junior Science and Humanities Symposia program is jointly sponsored by the United States Departments of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, in cooperation with leading research universities
throughout the nation. Forty-eight regional symposia are affiliated with the JSHS program, reaching over 10,000 high school students and teachers throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, and in the Department of Defense Dependents Schools, Europe and Pacific Rim regions.

The university sponsored symposia invite the participation of secondary schools within their regions.
